3) Mission statement the mission of North Side Learning Center is to aid in adult and youth literacy development, and to be instrumental in teaching self-sufficiency and self actualization to newcomers in our community.
The vision of North Side Learning Canter
is be an example for constructive neighborhood development, community
bridge building and empowerment through education on the north side of Syracuse, New York.
4) My tasks included Read books, helped with homework including corrections in ages ranging from 8 -11 years old
On Monday January 4,2016 I went to North Side learning Center (http://northsidelearning.org/) for my community service, I went to help 6th grades students for their Homework, read a book with them, the 6th grades were very busy talking and playing round.it was the first time working with them, it was not bad, i will work on them well next time
I also volunteered at the North Side Learning Center. the first I arrived , I thought there would be a teacher with me and I would be an assistant. the supervisor, Mr.Al-Dubil told me there wasn't a teacher ; I was going to be the teacher . All I felt at first was fear. I had never been a teacher before and I had never been in charge of a group of kids. Most of them were between 8 and 11/ and sixth graders. Most of the kids were doing homework. they were respectful and worked hard. unfortunately there were three students who were unwilling to do anything positive. They always said that they had no homework, so they ran around the room, screaming, swearing and disrupting the other Students.when I asked them to sit down, they ignored me and when up to a student who was working and said something bad to them. that caused the quiet student to get up and chase after troubled student.it was very challenging to get them all on task. I had no other helper to at least keep one group on task while I tried to make a connection with the negative attitude kids. I finally had to remove one student who was out of control. I felt good that he listened to me , but I felt bad at the some time, because I wanted him to achieve something positive in the class.
My 2nd community service was at
Syracuse City School District at Fowler high school.

Two ESL Students but I can help other students who need help in math (Algebra).
I am assist two specific students, two student are from Sudan, They are new Students.
Fowler serve the community by Educating math to new students and math teacher thinks that I can give individual tuition. They do not speak that much English.
I meet them in math classroom, on Wednesdays and Fridays at lunch time. I start at 12:06 unit 12:45, I give up my lunch so I can work with them. Both boys are brothers from my country, Sudan and They are new arrived to America. I can tell they know math, but they just don't know what they are doing, because is not same math as Sudan math. they speak three language, they also speak Arabic, but not same as me, they have different accent.
there is one boy who was new. He did his homework, but he was so worried that it was wrong. I watched him talk to his sister,in their language.Even though I couldn't speak his language, I knew they were talking about his homework. I approached him and I asked him if he needed help. He said, "yes". I checked his work and everything was right. He was so pleased. Now, every time he sees me, he smiles at me, waves, and says "Hi". He knows he can trust to be a friend when he needs one. He has a new found confidence in himself.
5) What was it like? It was great, my first time doing it I felt great, I was able to help other students.
